The Great South Run - Portsmouth - Sunday 17 October 2021

Dan Latham reports,

Sunday 17th October 2021 saw the return on the Great South Run, the South Coast's biggest 10-mile event. The course is flat and fast but can be quite windy. This year was not as windy as previous years but did still had a fair head wind to deal with every time you headed southwards on the course, which meant a harder second half, it was also warmer than expected. It was good to see a big race back in place and the atmosphere was as good as ever with bands on route and large crowds of supporters. The race start waves were staggered this year which helped with the flow of runners over the first mile or so.

Hardley Runners were well attended with 16 club members taking part; Dan Latham was the first home in 1:02:15 a new PB beating 2019's event by over 4 minutes. Our 2nd runner was Matt Tanner finishing 6th in his age category with a time of 1:07:03. Matt Casey was 3rd in for the club, he took 6 minutes off his PB to finish in a great time of 1:08:44. First lady home was Poppy Tanner finishing 27th in her age category with a great time of 1:09:06. Our 2nd lady was Jo Avery running her first competitive race in 20 months in a very respectable time of 1:24:02. Carl Hall had a great race running a new PB of 01:11:01. Ian Beveridge finished 9 minutes quicker than his time in 2019 with a time of 1:32:53. Tracy Hickson ran a time 10 minutes quicker than predicted, she put it down to race conditions and less talking :-) in a time of 1:41:56. Christina Brearley also ran a new 10-mile PB with a time of 1:42:34 (20 mins quicker than her previous time). Rob Wells & Jo Blackmore ran the route together completing in 01:55:33. Carole Bailey ran the race with minimal training so was pleased with her time of 2:02:09.

Also, of note; two of the guest runners that joined in the lockdown series of events from Longparish 2nd Sunday of the Month group also competed; Christina Searle ran a massive PB to come 3rd V55 and in the top 100 ladies with a time of 01:14:31 and Raymond Searle also ran a great time in 01:12:28, hopefully we will see these guys as 2nd claim members in the near future. ;-)

Well done everyone. All in all, it was a great race this year, a big race atmosphere with a moderate distance. We'd recommend this for all runners that want to experience a big race buzz and for anyone that wants a tackle their PB over the 10-mile distance.
